Sophie Bailey

Sophie’s interest in pottery can be traced back to a childhood surrounded by contemporary ceramics. Through frequent visits to Crete, she became intimately acquainted with the pottery of the ancient Minoan Civilisation. Evening courses in London progressed into a City & Guilds Ceramic degree. Bringing up four children, however, made progress rather slow and it is only recently that time has allowed a more consistent focus.

Sophie’s work is vessel-based and mainly thrown using stoneware or earthenware clay. She refines the individual pieces, thinning and shaping them for a hand-hewn quality. Her work has recently been exhibited at The Chair in Hay-on-Wye.
