Sophie Bailey
Sophie’s interest in pottery can be traced back to a childhood surrounded by contemporary ceramics. Her father worked for the Oxford Gallery which in the 70’s and 80’s was at the forefront of the art and design scene. The inspiration continued with frequent visits to Crete where she got intimately acquainted with the pottery of the ancient Minoan Civilisation. Evening courses in London progressed into a City & Guilds Ceramic degree. Bringing up four children, however, made progress rather slow and it is only recently that time has allowed a more consistent focus.
Sophie’s work is vessel-based and mainly thrown using stoneware or earthenware clay. She refines the individual pieces, thinning and shaping them for a hand-hewn quality.
Her work has recently been exhibited at The Chair in Hay-on-Wye.
