Julian Bailey was born in Cheshire in 1963, son of artist parents Robert Dudley and Anna Bailey. He trained at the Ruskin School of Art as a member of New College, Oxford. In 1985 he further studied for an MA at the Royal Academy Schools.

Julian and the family moved to West Dorset in 1998 and have lived at the Old Vicarage ever since. For several years Julian painted the coastal stretch from Lulworth Cove to Ringstead Bay, sometimes from a little dinghy stored down at the beach. Seven one-man shows took place at Browse and Darby over these twenty or more years. In recent years Julian’s attention turned towards the landscape around Dorchester. Under the influence of Thomas Hardy he began a major series of work based on Tess of the D’urbevilles and other Hardy novels. Julian’s work can be found in galleries throughout the country and has been widely collected over the last forty years.
